about

Music inspired by driving in deserted streets, April 2020. Composed and realized from April 8 to April 26 2020. The melody for "Sound Sleep" was something I heard in a dream and tried to recreate. "Delorean" is dedicated to whoever was driving a Delorean on Alabama near Graustark the week of April 20 to 24.

All the tracks on this release were made on Ableton between April 8 and April 26, 2020. I know the dates because I purchased and downloaded Ableton Intro on April 8. And I uploaded the finished thing to Bandcamp on the night of April 26. In early April I decided I wanted to make some new sounds and I decided I wanted to work at my living room desktop computer and not my downstairs music room laptop that has an older version of Ableton loaded. I had never realized Ableton Intro was only $99, and even though several reviewers warned that you couldn't really do full tracks or albums with it's limitations, I thought it sounded perfect for my needs and skills. So I started five tracks, titled "2020 01", "2020 02", etc and would add bits to them at night after work. On the weekend (I guess it really was 3 weekends) I stated structuring the melodies and rhythms into tracks. The album consists of 5 tracks plus 2 versions of the title track and a long ambient piece that is somewhat related to the others. So it's either an EP with some extra tracks or an album. Even though I had the intention of making an ambient album a beat drifted in at some point. You may notice the beat doesn't vary very much. It's a slow pondering four-on-the-floor. I like to call it a disco beat, but it's a fairly slow and sleepy disco. The title of the album is inspired by what it says: driving on deserted streets. It's driving music. I think that's where the idea of adding the same beat to all the songs came from. It's for monotonous straight line driving. I don't usually come up with titles before I start a track. "Delorean" existed prior to where the idea came from- seeing a Delorean on the opposite lane coming towards me on Alabama near Graustark, and being at first a bit confused about the boxy low dark object rolling towards me. It's a pretty striking vehicle from all sides. From the front it's as strange as it is striking.
